Hugo (ユーゴ Yūgo?) was an orphaned teenager and later bounty who was involved with Vector. He was the first man who Alita fell in love with.

Appearance[]

Hugo was a fair skinned teenager with short dark hair. He bore a large scar on his left wrist after having his hand transplanted with his older brother's. He typically wore a light colored wrap around his head with a light colored jacket, cape and pants. When posing as a lubricator to lure in his cyborg victims, he wore a cap with a havelock, tinted goggles, and a face mask. After being wounded by Clive Lee, Hugo was converted into a full cyborg using a civilian model body. He would then use Daisuke Ido's trademark hat and trench coat to mask his identity until he could confront Vector.

An illustration by Yukito Kishiro for the 2003 Ultra Jump calendar depicts Hugo as being light skinned with black hair, brown eyes and wearing a white shirt with a white bandanna on his head.[2]

Personality[]

Hugo was known for being very stubborn when it came to his goals and aspirations. Despite this, he was also an honest person, admitting to any crime he was a participant of instead of trying to deflect or deny it.

Relationships[]

Hugo's brother[]

Hugo had a deep admiration for his older brother and looked up to him. After his brother was killed by a Hunter-warrior, Hugo decided to continue his dream to someday visit the city of Tiphares no matter what the cost.

Vector[]

Hugo first met Vector when he had his arm transplanted with his brother's. Hugo was enamored with Vector's lifestyle and aspired to someday be like him. He would fully believe Vector's lie about taking him to Tiphares upon paying him 10 million chips and strived to show him he was more than capable of accomplishing it; upon learning that it was a ruse, their business arrangement and association fell through and Hugo accosted him for his treachery.

Alita[]

Hugo came across Alita one day while the latter was tracking down a bounty within the Scrapyard. Initially seeing her as just a friend, Hugo found out that Alita had a strong affection towards him; at first he was hesitant to it, but eventually found himself beginning to reciprocate those feelings; shortly upon his injury by the hands of Clive Lee, he admitted that he liked Alita as well. He would value her friendship throughout their time together and his last words were in gratitude towards her.

Abilities[]

No known special abilities.

History[]

Hugo was born in ES 562.[1] He was raised by his much older brother and his wife Nana. His brother, who worked as an engineer for the Factory, developed a burning curiosity to get to Tiphares, which he one day decided to pursue.

He ran away from home after Nana betrayed his brother to the hunter-warrior Clive Lee for building an illegal airship to attempt to fly to Tiphares. Since then, he had inherited a burning desire to go to the floating city himself. He first encountered Vector three years before the start of the main story, when he recognized his brother's hand being sold by one of the latter's dealers and impressed Vector by voluntarily trading his hand for his brother's. Believing that Vector could access Tiphares because of his pull in the Scrapyard, he fell for Vector's offer to get him there if he could bring him 10 million chips. Hugo ostensibly performs odd maintenance jobs for Scrapyard residents such as Ido, but has taken to illegally supplementing his income by posing along with his accomplices Tanji and Van, as a lubrication crew for cyborgs. They then paralyzed their victims and stole their spinal columns, as these fetched the highest prices on the black market for body parts.

Plot[]

Hunter-Warrior Arc[]

Alita meets Hugo during her hunt for Megil, and is impressed by his willingness to protect her even though he is grossly outmatched. The two then strike up a friendship, but Hugo is blinded by his obsession to reach Tiphares and does not realize that Alita is romantically interested in him. As he gets close to reaching the 10 million chip mark for Vector, Hugo encounters a disguised Zapan who had figured out he was behind the spine thefts. This encounter resulted in Tanji and Van getting killed and Hugo managed to burn Zapan before fleeing; however, this was reported by Zapan to the Factory and Hugo became a marked bounty.[3] Despite learning the truth about him, Alita is still willing to go with him to Tiphares. He is nearly killed by Clive Lee, and is only saved by Alita linking her life support to his brain.[4] Transplanted into a cyborg body by Ido, Hugo learns the reality that a surface dweller such as himself has no hope of reaching Tiphares; refusing to believe it, Hugo decides to go confront Vector in person with Alita.

After Vector also confirms it, Hugo breaks down and begins to cry while laughing maniacally; he mocks himself for being a fool and jumps out a nearby window. Discarding his 10 million chips by showering it over the Scrapyard, he climbs up to one of the Factory tubes connecting Tiphares to the Scrapyard and, in a feeble attempt to continue pursuing his dream, begins to climb it. He makes it up further than any previous attempt made by a civilian, but is crippled by a massive spiked ring dropped down the tube. Despite losing a leg, he continues to crawl up until he is confronted by Alita. She is able to convince Hugo that they can still be together and find a new dream they can both share and agrees to come down; unfortunately, a second ring is dropped, and Hugo is torn to pieces. He is caught by Alita, but as she begins to pull him up, Hugo notices his remaining arm is starting to give out; he is able to share his last words with Alita and thanks her before falling to his death.[5]
